From 1977 to 1982, Pero was the National Motorcycle Road Racing Champion. He won twice in the 350cc and 500cc racing classes, as well as two times with the 410cc Production Series. Pero established the New Zealand land speed record in New Zealand for a 350cc motorcycle, which he did in 1979. Today, the record at 238 km/h is still in place.
Pero started his mortgage broking company in 1991. Pero founded a real estate firm under the same name in 2011. He is now the Chief Executive Officer at Mike Pero Real Estate.
Pero was brought up with his two siblings Iain and Shelly in the suburb of Wainoni in Christchurch.
