Kunigonis was a volunteer assistant coach when he joined Virginia Tech’s coaching staff in 2009. Before being promoted to full-time assistant coach, he worked as a volunteer assistant during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Kunigonis was elevated to the position of team offense manager. His leadership saw the Hokies have a great season and one of their most notable draft picks ever. Chad Pinder was the Oakland Athletics’ 71st overall pick during the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft.
On January 5, 2015, Kunigonis was announced as the new head coach at Northern Illinois University.
Kunigonis worked five seasons as an assistant coach and recruitment coordinator at two schools in Western New York after he graduated. He worked as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Niagara University in Lewiston in 2003 and 2004. From 2005 to 2007, he was at Canisius College, Buffalo. They reached the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament during his time at both schools. Kunigonis served as an assistant at Radford University for the 2008 season.
