Karney was a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils football club while attending Arizona State University. Karney played in 28 of the 46 Sun Devils games and ran for 78 yards on 32 carries. It also included a $1.2million signing bonus. Karney scored two touchdowns receiving and one rushing on Sunday night football’s December 10, 2006. These were his first three NFL touchdowns. Karney was named All-pro after the 2006 season and was also voted alternate to the Pro Bowl. He was again an alternate to Pro Bowl in 2007.
