Santana created The Mikael Santana Band after the release of In Transit. They used The Black Diamond Club in Memphis as their base and regularly played there as headliners or opening up for blues artists like Little Jimmy King, Blind Mississippi Morris Morris, Studebaker John and Sam Myers. They opened for B.B. on June 2, 2000. King at the B.B. King Homecoming in Indianola, Mississippi.

In 1988, Santana returned to Dyersburg, Tennessee, where he studied Medical Laboratory Science at Jackson State Community College for three years. He also studied recordings of Blues harmonica masters like Little Walter and James Cotton. Within two years, he was working as an apprentice under Butch Mudbone at Beale Street, Memphis, Tennessee.

Mikael Santana was a native of Lakeland, Florida. He lived in Miami between 1960 and 1972. His mother was a ticket agent for an airline which allowed the family to travel extensively. Santana was already a teenager when he traveled extensively to Brazil, Chile, Peru, Chile, Guatemala and Paraguay. In 1972, his parents divorced. He moved to Nashville with his sister, brother and mother. They all lived with his grandparents until his mother completed her teaching degree. His mother was hired to teach at Dyersburg Senior High School, Dyersburg, Tennessee after he graduated. Santana graduated from high school in 1976, and later returned to Miami.

Santana worked six years in various jobs, including short-order cook, apprentice carpenter and clerk in a bookshop, before enlisting with the U.S. Army. Santana learned Mandarin Chinese at the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, California, during his time in the Army. After completing language school, Santana was assigned to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, where he will remain permanently. He earned an associate degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in General Aeronautics while at Fort Bragg. He was baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church in 1986 and given the name St. Mikael, the Archangel. In 1987, he was discharged by the Army.
