Mikael Colville–Andersen, a Canadian-Danish urban design expert and urban mobility specialist, was born 29 January 1968 in Fort McMurray (Alberta, Canada). He is the CEO of Copenhagenize Design Company. This company was founded in Copenhagen in 2009. He works with governments and cities around the globe to encourage bicycle-friendly behavior. The host of The Life-Sized City documentary television series on urbanism, which aired on TVOntario in 2017 and on international channels in 2018, including on TVOntario. In 2018, Season 1 of The Life-Sized City received five Canadian Screen Awards nominations.
Before he became an urban designer, he worked as a screenwriter and film director. Zakka West, his debut feature film, premiered at Copenhagen International Film Festival. He directed and wrote several short films, including Breaking Up (1999), which won an award. In 1997, he founded Euroscreenwriters, the first pan-European organization for screenwriters.
He is known for his philosophy about simplifying urban planning and urban cycling and how cities should be designed instead of engineered. He is at the forefront of utilising observational techniques inspired by the likes of William H. Whyte for pedestrian and bicycle planning and has been called “the Modern Day Jane Jacobs”. He employs anthropology and sociology in his work to develop liveable cities and, in 2012, he spearheaded the largest study of cyclist behaviour ever undertaken – The Choreography of an Urban Intersection – tracking the desire lines of 16,631 cyclists through an intersection in Copenhagen over a 12-hour period.
