He began film criticism for the weekly Dilema and quickly became vice-director of pro Cinema, a magazine that was also connected to the Romanian TV station.

Mihai Chirilov began his career as an artistic director at the Romanian Film Festival, New York City, founded by Corina Sutu in 2006. This festival promotes Romanian cinema in the U.S. Film ETC organizes it. Film ETC organizes the event in partnership with the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which also hosts it since Dec. 2011, at its 6th Edition.

In 2012 he makes a special appear in Tudor Giurgiu’s “Of snails and men”, next to Valeria Seciu and Dorel Visan.

In 2012 Chirilov co-presents at MoMa (New York) the first U.S. full retrospective of Romanian veteran director Lucian Pintilie. For the occasion Chirilov curates a special brochure about Pintilie’s career containing an exclusive interview which Pintilie gave to him just before the retrospective.

He translated many Chuck Palahniuk books into Romanian. In collaboration with Alex, he also wrote a book about Lars von Trier. Leo Serban- Lars Von Trier- filmele. Idea design & print 2006). His articles were published in numerous anthologies.

The program at J.B. Film Center was presented in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute of New York, and possible by the Fellowship for Understanding through Film, developed through a grant from Kathryn W. Davis with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
