Dion, a Canadian retired ice hockey goaltender, was born February 11, 1954 in Granby (Quebec). He was active in the World Hockey Association as well as the National Hockey League between 1975 and 1985. Before deciding to pursue a career as a professional hockey player, he played minor league baseball.

After abandoning his team in a game against Boston Bruins, Dion was traded to Winnipeg Jets for cash 1980-81. He signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent in June 1981 and enjoyed his best NHL season. In 1981-82, Dion was a Pens player who won 25 games and was selected to participate in the NHL all star game. In the first round of the playoffs, Pittsburgh almost beat the New York Islanders, Dion was also prominent. Dion played only ten games between 1984-85 and was solid the following two years. Before retiring from hockey, he spent the majority of the year in American Hockey League.

Dion, who had previously played two years for the Cincinnati Stingers in the Cincinnati Stingers’ league, was named by the Quebec Nordiques as part of the Dispersal Draft in 1979 following the merger of WHA/NHL. Dion was a star in Quebec and kept them in games when they were injured.

Dion had a successful junior hockey season with the Montreal Bleu Blanc Rouge. He initially wanted to be a professional baseball player. Dion was a professional baseball player in the Montreal Expos’ team with the Cocoa Expos, and the West Palm Beach Expos during the 1971 and 1972 seasons. He eventually gave up baseball to pursue hockey.

After his two NAHL pro seasons playing with the Mohawk Valley Comets of the NAHL, Dion was recruited to the WHA’s Indianapolis Racers for the second half 1975-76 season. Dion was the league’s top netminder and earned the Ben Hatskin Trophy for his performance in the 31 final games.
