Michael Weston King was born in Derbyshire in England in 1961. He was raised in Southport, Lancastrian. King moved to Liverpool, near Liverpool to pursue a musical career when he was 16. King was a guitarist in several bands that were on the fringe of the late 1970s/early 1980s Liverpool post punk scene. He is most well-known for his band, Fragile Friends, which he formed with Chas Colley. They performed at Eric’s club right before it closed.
They signed to Glitterhouse Records in Germany and released their first album, “Singing the Glory Down” in 1995. This received a positive reception from critics as well as the British alt-country scene. Townes van Zandt, Michael’s friend from Europe 1994 and 1995, performed “Riding on the Range” together on the album. Blue Rodeo, Joe Henry and Joe Ely were also open for them. They released The Kings Highway in 1996, followed by Wines, Lines, and Valentines in 1997.
Following a series of solo tours around Europe, King reconvened the Good Sons to record their fourth album Happiness in early 2001. The relative failure of the album led to a more permanent break-up of the band.
In 2002, and after 200 solo shows across Europe and America, King released Live…In Dinky Town, a collection of live and solo performances gathered shows in Hamburg, Austin, Amsterdam, Bilbao and Manchester. The album also featured contributions from Jackie Leven and Andy White.
King and The Good Sons, taking their name from Nick Cave’s album, The Good Son, formed The Good Sons in 1992 to offer a British alternative to alt- country.

Michael Weston King, born 11 November 1961, is an English singer/songwriter. He was previously the leader of Alt-country band The Good Sons.
King was inspired by the latest overseas bands like R.E.M. and Green on Red and The Dream Syndicate, and whose influences mirrored his newfound interest in Gram Parsons and Hank Williams as well as the new wave country acts such Lyle Lovett and Dwight Yoakam. King joined Gary Hall and The Stormkeepers in the mid ’80s. They remained together until 1991 when the band broke up.
The Good Sons had ceased to perform in 1999 and King chose to record his debut solo album, God Shaped Hole. The album got released in October 1999, on Glitterhouse Records. The album included the Phil Ochs song “No More Songs”, and a tribute to the now late Townes Van Zandt “Lay Me Down”.

In 2011, the album he had made in 2009, under the band name My Darling Clementine saw its UK release. Entitled How Do You Plead, it was hailed by Country Music People as the “greatest country album ever by a British artist”. Produced by Neil Brockbank (Nick Lowe), it featured, amongst others, Geraint Watkins and Martin Belmont. The debut single, “100,000 Words” became a BBC Radio 2 hit, and the album was voted Album of the Year by CMP, Maverick, & 3rd Coast Music Texas, while the British Country Music Association (BCMA) awarded the band “Americana Band of the Year”.
