Vatikiotis was a native of Indianapolis, where he was born on the 30th July 1957. He received a first-class honours from London’s School of Oriental and African Studies and was then awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree at St. Catherine’s College in Oxford in 1984. His doctoral research focused on Southeast Asian languages and history.

Vatikiotis, who joined the Geneva-based Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (2005-2015), has been working to promote and facilitate dialogue in armed conflict throughout Asia. According to the BBC, Vatikiotis discovered that the rebels had not spoken face-to-face with the Thai government when he was called in to negotiate between them and the protesting Red Shirts in Bangkok in 2010. He also learned that ministers from the government were calling them on their mobiles to conduct ad hoc negotiations about the move. He had to convince the Red Shirts that they should write down their demands and not rely on informal negotiations with authorities.

The Spice Garden was published by Vatikiotis in 2004 (ISBN 978-97979642424). It is a novel set on the Maluku islands in eastern Indonesia. Two friends, a Catholic priest, and a Muslim trader, are faced with a terrifying religious conflict. Time magazine said that the novel “evokes the sights and smells of the Tropics” and was not afraid to show the violence of that era. Vatikiotis’ attempts to explain the social forces underpinning it is described as “admirably balanced”.

Michael Vatikiotis, a journalist, writer and private diplomat, was born July 30, 1957 in Indianapolis. He has been working in Southeast Asia ever since 1987. For 16 years, he was editor of Far Eastern Economic Review. He also served as a correspondent for Hong Kong’s news magazine. He is currently based in Singapore as the Asia Regional Director for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. This Geneva-based private foundation facilitates dialogue to end armed conflict. Vatikiotis is also a frequent contributor to Al Jazeera, the BBC and other regional and international newspapers.

Vatikiotis began his career as a trainee producer at the BBC World Service in London. He was later posted to Jakarta in 1987 as a BBC correspondent. In 1988, he was appointed Jakarta bureau chief for the Far Eastern Economic Review. He was the bureau chief of the magazine in Kuala Lumpur (1991-4), and Bangkok (1994-7). He was also the President of the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand.

In 2017, Vatikiotis published Blood and Silk: Power and Conflict in Modern Southeast Asia (ISBN 978-1474602006), an observer’s account of the changing social and political landscape of Southeast Asia.
