He raced a midget car at Angell Park Speedway every week during the 2008 U.S. Racing Season and the #30 car in the ASA Late Model Series events.
2016 Australian Speedcar Champion (and first ever New Zealander to win this title)
He raced at Madison International Speedway for Ken Hendricks’ American Speed Association Late Model Team, Urban Force Racing in the middle of the 2007 U.S. Season. Dan Lensing replaced him in July and he began to run a mix of pavement and midget races for different owners.

Pickens won 2005’s 55th Australian Speedcar Grand Prix at the Avalon Raceway, Victoria. Pickens also finished second at the Australian Speedcar Championship held at the Perth Motorplex that year. Later, he would finish third in the Australian Championship in Lismore (New South Wales). Paramatta Raceway awarded Michael the Australian Speedcar title in 2016.
Pickens participated in the Chili Bowl midget race at Tulsa (Oklahoma) in 2005. Pickens was awarded Rookie of The Year for his outstanding driving, which saw him go from a 19th position starting to finish the race in 6th place. Some key NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Roush Racing personnel noticed him. Pickens didn’t have any previous experience on the pavement as there aren’t any in New Zealand. However, he did participate in the Roush Driver Development Competition Program 2005. Pickens made it to round three of the competition, and was the last driver to be eliminated.
