The fortunes of both keepers changed in August 2003 when Murray suffered a back injury and Oakes took over for Wanderers’ Premier League campaign. He was an admirable player in a difficult season but was replaced in January 2004 by Paul Jones, a controversial signing.

In July 2007, Oakes signed for Cardiff City on a one-year deal, linking up his former Wolves manager Dave Jones. He began the season on the bench but moved into the starting XI after several errors from the on-loan Ross Turnbull. With Turnbull returning from loan back to Middlesbrough, Oakes found his only competition to be Irishman David Forde and continued in the number one spot.

Oakes worked as goalkeeping coach for Wrexham between 2008 and 2015, and between 2017 and 2018. After a year with Walsall, he returned to Wrexham in 2019.

Bosnich’s injury record and speculation that he would leave to join Manchester United gave Oakes opportunities. He made 60 appearances for the club over the next three years. During his time at Villa Park, he also won seven England Under-21 caps. Oakes asked for a transfer after David James was recruited by the club following Bosnich’s 1999 departure.

Oakes started his career at Aston Villa’s youth program. In 1992-93, he played in nineteen games for Gloucester City. He then spent a short time on loan at Scarborough in 1994 to play one league match. At the beginning of the 1996-97 season, he finally had the opportunity to play in Villa’s first squad. His debut was made on 17 August 1996, in a 2-1 loss at Sheffield Wednesday. He was 22 years old and acted as a substitute for Mark Bosnich.

Oakes traveled to First Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers for PS500,000 in October 1999. He quickly overtook Mike Stowell, who was long-serving at Molineux. He was the first-team goalkeeper from September 1999 to September

2002. However, he suffered a shoulder injury. Matt Murray replaced him. Oakes received a medal in the 2003 Football League First Division playoff/play-off victory against Sheffield United at Millennium Stadium in May 2003.

Oakes regained his place in October 2004, post-relegation, but lost his place through injury in October 2005, to Stefan Postma. Although Postma was later released, Murray’s return to fitness meant that Oakes continued as deputy in 2006–07. He was given a free transfer in May 2007 after 220 appearances in total. Upon his release, Oakes drew praise from his former colleague Murray, stating that “I learned a lot from him and he has always been very supportive of me. Whoever signs him is going to have a top keeper.”
