In autumn 2011, he returned to New York as the paper’s senior architecture critic and critic. His articles on Hudson Yards and Penn Station, sound and climate change, New York Public Library, New York Trade Center, transit, infrastructure, redevelopment following Hurricane Sandy, as also on Syrian refugee camp as do-it yourself cities, cultural identity and protest in Baghdad, Rio, and post-revolutionary Cairo have all helped to shape policy and the public discussion about architecture, urbanism and architectural criticism. For his role in saving the David and Gladys Wright House by Frank Lloyd Wright, Kimmelman received the Spirit Award from the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy in 2014. He was the Annie Sonnenblick Visiting Writer at Wesleyan University in 2016. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 and 2014 Franke Visiting Fellow at The Whitney Humanities Center at Yale, where he had also been a Poynter Fellow, he has received honorary doctorates from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design in 2013 and the Pratt Institute in May
- In 2018, his and Josh Haner’s climate series in The New York Times won an award from the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) for “two superb articles on the environmental threats facing two Asian cities” that was “journalism par excellence.” In 2019, he was given the Preservation Award by the American Friends of the Georgian Group for his contribution to historic preservation.
He is a pianist, who was a student of Seymour Bernstein and still performs solo and with chamber ensembles on concert series throughout New York and Europe. He also served as an editor for the magazine I.D. New England Monthly architecture critic. He has written extensively about Gerhard Richter and Gerhard Richter as well as Matthew Barney, Raymond Pettibon, Lucian Freud and Matthew Barney, along with architects Alejandro Aravena and Shigeru Ban, Peter Zumthor, and Oscar Niemeyer. He is the author of Portraits and The Accidental Masterpiece. In 2007, he appeared in My Kid Could Paint That, which was a national bestseller.
