Her father Gemal, a Medgidia native, was a successful trader who had invested his profits in land. He became a well-known landlord at Constanta. But the communists took his property and sent him to labor camps at Danube-Black Sea Channel. He fell in love with a lovely schoolteacher after he was released. Gewerkan was his name and she was twenty-years younger than him. They were married, and in an attempt to escape the persecution of Muslims by Dobruja authorities, they moved to Bucharest, where Melek, their sole child, was born on October 4, 1960.
Melek was diagnosed in 2006 with ovarian carcinoma and had to have surgery. She lost her fight against the disease in 2008 after the disease recurred.
Melek was a model of elegance, and her style was well-received. She was published in major magazines in Romania, including Modern magazine. She was part of the Romanian golden modeling generation, along with Ilinca Vlad and Eugenia Enciu, Rodica Prastasievici, Janine, Janine, Catalin Botezatu and Romanita Iovan. She traveled with Stela Popescu and Alexandru Arsinel, as well as Romica Puceanu. She was a prominent figure for her high-profile relationships and exclusive collections she presented to the Central Committee of Romania’s Communist Party, diplomatic corps, and embassies. She was hardworking and always willing to help. She was very fashionable and loved hats. Many believe she was the most famous model during the communist era.
