The team’s performance in 2007-08 was remarkable. They beat Bristol City 1-0 to secure a spot in the Premier League. Ashbee was able to lead Hull from the Football League’s bottom division to the top. Other players who helped Hull rise through the four divisions are Andy Dawson, BoazMyhill, and Ryan France. Ashbee, who was the captain of Hull’s first ever top-flight match against Fulham on 16 August 2008, achieved a feat that is considered unique in English football. He had been the Football League’s bottom to top captain.
Upon his return on the first game of the 2010–11 season, Ashbee scored the second goal in Hull ‘s 2–0 victory over Swansea City.
In January 2011, Ashbee signed for Preston North End, managed by former Hull manager Phil Brown, after handing in a transfer request to then Hull City manager Nigel Pearson. Ashbee was offered a 1-year contract extension at Hull, but wanted to sign a 2-year contract, which Preston offered him. He went on to make 19 appearances for Preston during the season, but could not prevent his club from being relegated. Ashbee was named club captain of Preston in June 2011.
Ashbee, however, was cursed by an injury from the Championship campaign. He was diagnosed with an osteochondral defects, which is a degenerative bone condition that affects his femur. To stimulate bone regrowth, he had to have fourteen holes drilled in his bone. His doctor warned him that the injury could have serious consequences for his career and his ability to walk. Ashbee spent four months on crutches and was out of commission for most of 2005-06. However, he was still a favorite among Tigers fans. He received a standing ovation at Watford’s final game of the season despite being sidelined.

In 1994, Ashbee started his career with Derby County. After two seasons with the Rams, Ashbee failed to make an impact. He was loaned out to Cambridge United until 1996.

Towards the end of the 2008–09 season, in a fixture against Aston Villa on 4 May 2009, Ashbee suffered another career-threatening injury, rupturing a posterior cruciate ligament in his knee. It was initially thought that he would return to action in the Autumn, however on 18 August it was reported that Ashbee required further surgery on the knee and would likely miss the entire 2009–10 season.
