Melvin Tucker II, born January 4, 1972, is an American football coach. He is the current head football coach at Michigan State University. He was the former head coach of the University of Colorado.

Tucker served as the interim head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL), for five games in 2011. Tucker has served as both the interim head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) for five games in 2011.

Melvin Tucker II was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Cleveland Heights High School where he was a football standout. He then attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he played defensive back for the Wisconsin Badgers football team. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in agricultural business management.

On January 20, 2015, following another record-setting low defensive season for the Bears, Tucker was replaced by former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio under new head coach John Fox. He spent the 2015 season with the Alabama Crimson Tide as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach, during which the team won the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship.

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Tucker as their defensive coordinator in 2009. Tucker was appointed the defensive coordinator by the Jacksonville Jaguars in

2009. The team quickly rose to the fourth spot in the NFL’s rankings. Tucker was appointed interim head coach of Jacksonville on November 29, 2011. This followed the dismissal of Del Rio. Tucker coached the team through their last five games. He was considered for the full-time job until Mike Mularkey, the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive coordinator, was appointed head coach. Tucker won his first win as a head coach during week 14. He defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-14. As interim head coach, he went 2-3. He informed the media on January 12, 2012 that he would be returning to his role as Jaguars’ defensive coordinator. Tucker was named assistant head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 13, 2012. Tucker was appointed defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears on January 18, 2013.

Tucker started his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Michigan State University Spartans in 1997. He was a defensive backs coach with the Miami University Redhawks in 1999. In 2000, he followed Saban to Louisiana State University, to take the same position with LSU Tigers. Under Jim Tressel, he was the Ohio State University Buckeyes’ defensive backs coach. Ryan replaced him.

Following one of the worst defensive seasons in Bears’ history in 2013, Tucker was criticized by the media. As a result, the team fired two of Tucker’s assistant coaches, linebackers coach Tim Tibesar and defensive line coach Mike Phair. The Bears replaced them with Paul Pasqualoni as defensive line coach and Reggie Herring as linebackers coach.
