Mel Reynolds Biography

Mel Reynolds is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 8, 1952 in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, United States. Melvin “Mel” Reynolds, born January 8, 1952, is an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party and served as a United States House of Representatives member from 1993 to 1995. After being convicted by a jury of sexual assault in relation to sex with a campaign worker, he resigned in October 1995.

In April 1997, he was convicted of 16 additional counts of bank fraud and misusing campaign funds for his personal use. He also lied to FEC investigators. One count each of bank fraud, wire fraud, eight false statements on loan applications and conspiracy to defraud Federal Election Commission were all convicted. Four other counts included making false statements to FEC. These charges led to an additional sentence of 78 month in federal prison. This sentence was added on top of his 1995 sentence. Reynolds completed his sentence and was released after serving 42 months. The sentence Reynolds received for bank fraud was then reduced by President Bill Clinton and Reynolds was freed from prison. He was released from prison after serving the remainder of his sentence in a halfway house.

In 2004, Reynolds sought to win back his old House seat, but was overwhelmingly defeated in the Democratic primary by the man who had succeeded him, Jesse Jackson, Jr., with Jackson netting 88% of the vote. Reynolds sought the seat again, running in the 2013 special election to replace Jackson after Jackson retired. He came in 7th place in the Democratic primary.

On February 18, 2014, Reynolds was arrested in Zimbabwe for overstaying his visa. He was allegedly found to be in possession of pornographic videos he had filmed with several women at the hotel where he was staying. Possession of pornography is a crime in the country. He had also purportedly accrued over $24,000 in hotel charges that he had yet to pay. The pornography charges were later dropped, but he pleaded guilty to violating immigration laws, and was deported to South Africa. He claimed in early March 2014 to be hiding there from Zimbabwean death squads, who he claimed were targeting him because he possessed information about American companies from Chicago doing business illegally in Zimbabwe.

Reynolds was charged with sexual assault and criminal abuse in August 1994 for having a sexual relationship that began during the 1992 campaign. Reynolds was also charged with child pornography, for asking an underage campaign worker for “lewd photos of another girl age 15”, and obstruction of justice for convincing one the girls to lie to the authorities. He continued his campaign, and was reelected in November despite the charges. There was no opposition. Reynolds initially denied the charges. He claimed they were racially motivated. He was convicted of 12 counts of criminal and sexual assault, as well as sexual abuse, obstruction, child pornography solicitation, and criminal sexual assault on August 22, 1995. On October 1, 1995, he resigned from his seat. He could not have stayed in office if he tried to. Long- standing House rules stated that members convicted of a crime should not be allowed to vote on the floor or work in committees until the House Ethics Committee has reviewed the matter. Reynolds was sentenced for five years in federal prison. He was to be released in 1998.

From 1988 to 1992, Reynolds was a candidate in Democratic Party elections in the 2nd District. He defeated Gus Savage who was well-known for making racist and antisemitic comments that attracted criticism from Republicans and Democrats. Reynolds came third in 1988 with 14% of votes, with multiple candidates running. Reynolds lost 1990. However, Reynolds ran close to the finish line after Savage’s conduct in connection to a sex-related scandal was criticised by the House Ethics Committee.

Redistricting in 1992 pushed the 2nd into Chicago’s suburbs. Suburban voters were offended by Savage’s rhetoric and voted for Reynolds in the primary. Reynolds won a two to one margin in the primary-the real race in this heavily Democratic, predominantly black-majority district. In November, he won easily the general election. He was the first freshman to be elected to the Ways and Means Committee in over 14 years. He supported the North American Free Trade Agreement, and introduced legislation regarding gun control.

In January 2001, Reynolds was hired by Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH Coalition to decrease the number of young African-Americans going to prison.
