Mel Rees is one of the most popular and richest Welsh footballer who was born on January 25, 1967 in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. Melvyn John, 25 January 1967 – 30 Mai 1993), was a professional Welsh footballer who played 75 games in the Football League as goalkeeper. He died of cancer at 26.

Rees was an understudy for Tony Coton at Watford. He also spent time at Crewe Alexandra and Southampton on loan before he left to join West Bromwich Albion. Rees signed for Sheffield United in March 1992 for a fee PS25,000. He made his debut at the club on March 28th 1992 with a 2-0 win over Liverpool. Rees played in eight league matches that season. They won five and drew two. This ensured their survival and secured them a place in the FA Premier League.

Rees was diagnosed in 1992 with cancer of his bowel. Rees underwent surgery in August 1992 and was believed to have recovered shortly thereafter. He had to have more surgery after the disease returned in March 1993.

Rees was born and raised in Cardiff. He attended Fitzalan High School. He was part of the team that won the English Schools’ FA Cup. After signing up for a YTS program, he joined Cardiff City, his hometown club. His professional debut was made on September 8, 1984, in a defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion by 4-2. Rees didn’t make another league appearance until 1985, when he was subject to eight defeats in nine games during the 1985-86 season. Rees was sidelined almost a year due to a wrist injury. Graham Moseley, his replacement, sold him to Watford, First Division club, for PS60,000.

Rees made his First Division debut at Watford on 28/12/87, aged 20 years and 337 days. This was a record-setting achievement for the youngest footballer in the English Football League’s four divisions.

On 3 April 1993, Rees took a lap of honour prior to a FA Cup semi-final match between Sheffield United and their Steel City rivals Sheffield Wednesday after leading the two sides out. Former teammate Kevin Gage later recalled the moment, stating:
