Mel Pearson is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on February 8, 1959 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Mel Pearson was the son of George “Mel” Pearson, a Vancouver Canucks hockey player. He was born in Vancouver on February 8, 1959. His father’s playing career ended as a player with the Minnesota Fighting Saints in 1973. Mel, who was six years old, played hockey at Edina East High School in Minneapolis under coach Willard Ikola. After visiting Michigan Tech and Pearson “felt in love” with the campus, Pearson was both recruited to play college hockey at Michigan Tech and Michigan. Pearson was able to meet John MacInnes, the coach, while on his visit. He “made me feel so welcomed, and I knew that I wanted to play for him immediately.” From 1977 to 1981, Pearson was a forward for Michigan Tech and scored 21 goals in 56 games. He helped the team reach the semi-final of the 1981 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament. The team lost to Minnesota. In his four years of playing, Pearson won the Great Lakes Invitational tournament for Michigan Tech four times. In 1979, he scored the tournament-winning goal against Michigan in triple overtime. In 1981, Pearson graduated with a degree from Michigan Tech in business administration.
Pearson was considered for the Michigan Tech head coaching post in 1996. However, his former teammate Tim Watters was elected instead. In 1997, Jeff Jackson made Pearson one of the assistant coaches for the US national junior ice hockey team. They competed at the 1997 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. Although the team lost the championship to Canada, its second place finish was the best until the 2004 championship. Pearson was interviewed for the position of head coach at Miami University, and was later offered it. He stayed at Michigan and was soon promoted to associate head coach. Berenson stated, “We’re doing this to recognize [his] loyalty towards the program.” The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) presented Pearson with the Terry Flanagan award, which honors an assistant coach for his career work. Pearson answered the question in 2007: “[Berenson] gives me a lot of responsibility.” He allows us to be hands-on. You have the chance to win every year. I don’t need an ego to be a head coaching coach. However, Michigan Tech hired Pearson to fill the vacant position of head coach after Michigan’s defeat to Minnesota-Duluth.
On September 24, 2014, Michigan Tech announced a five-year extension for Pearson, keeping him signed through the 2020–21 season.
On April 24, 2017, Pearson was announced as the new head coach at the University of Michigan.
Pearson accepted the role of assistant coach for the Michigan Wolverines, under Red Berenson who was just finishing his fourth season as head coaches. Larry Pedrie, Pearson’s assistant, was heavily focused on recruiting. He described their typical schedule as “practice, get in the vehicle, go to a game, then get back in my car to see a prospect on Sunday night.” After Pedrie’s departure, the coaching staff continued their recruiting efforts, with Billy Powers and David Shand filling in for him. The Wolverines were able to qualify for all NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship tournaments starting in 1991. In eleven of these tournaments they advanced to the Frozen Four and won the national championship in 1998 and 1996. Over fifty of the Michigan players Pearson recruited have gone on to the NHL.

Melvin K. Pearson, born February 8, 1959, is a former college hockey player who is currently the head coach for the Michigan Wolverines men’s ice hockey team. Pearson was a Michigan Tech player from 1977 to 1981. He then worked as an assistant coach with the team from 1982 until 1988. After the 1987-88 season, Pearson spent 23 years at Michigan as an assistant coach and as associate head coach under Red Berenson. He returned to Michigan Tech in 2011 as the head coach.
Following MacInnes’s retirement in 1982, Michigan Tech made Jim Nahrgang the assistant coach and promoted him to head coach. Nahrgang and Herb Boxer were both former players who served as MacInnes’s coaches. They sought Pearson for the second coaching job. “[T]hey were what really got me into coaching. Pearson stated that he hadn’t thought of becoming a coach before they approached him. Pearson was also responsible for recruiting players, including eventual National Hockey League (NHL), regulars Randy McKay, and Damian Rhodes. He also recruited Shawn Harrison, Michigan Tech’s first Western Collegiate Hockey Association, scoring champion. Pearson was retained as an assistant coach when Nahrgang, who resigned on February 15, 1985, became the head coach. Michigan Tech’s record as an assistant coach was 97-136-9 during Pearson’s tenure. The team did not advance beyond the first round in the WCHA playoffs and was not eligible for the NCAA tournament.
Michigan Tech athletic director Suzanne Sanregret had been given the authority and resources to “go after the best coach” following Jamie Russell’s resignation in March 2011, and she interviewed Pearson, Nebraska–Omaha associate coach Mike Hastings and Green Bay (USHL) head coach Eric Rud. Pearson’s interview took place four days after the loss to Minnesota–Duluth, and when Sanregret gave him 48 hours to decide whether to accept the position, he ultimately could not say yes. “[W]ith everything going on, it was just a tough time to make … a life-changing decision”, Pearson said. “So I just think I went with the safe way and said no”.
