Nafti was born in Toulouse, France. He made his professional debut at Toulouse FC. He was only used sparingly over a three-year period, but he also played many games with the reserves. 1999-2000 was his best season. He appeared in 13 games and scored one goal to help the team get back to Ligue 1 after a year absence.
Nafti joined Racing de Santander La Liga in summer 2000. He began his stint as a B-team player, just like his previous club. He played only three games in 2000-01 for the main squad. After being relegated, he became a key midfielder for the Cantabrians the next three years.
Nafti was signed on loan by Birmingham City in the final minutes of the January 2005 transfer window, making his Premier League debut on 5 February in a 2–0 loss away to Manchester United in which he started and was booked. Sometimes referred to as “Nasty” due to his fiery nature and tendency for cautions, he was primarily signed to replace the outgoing Robbie Savage, and finished the season strongly, which led to a permanent deal being agreed in the summer.
