Bullough is the son of Shane Bullough and LeeAnn Bullough. From 1983-1986, his father Shane was a Michigan State linebacker. Two of his younger brothers are Riley and Byron. Riley played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans and the NFL while Byron is with the Spartans.

Bullough signed as an undrafted-free agent with the Houston Texans on May 16, 2014. After Bullough was cut on August 30, 2014 the Houston Texans signed Max Bullough onto their practice squad on September 1, 2014. He had been unclaimed. Bullough made his NFL debut on November 30, 2014 against the Tennessee Titans. Bullough and former Michigan State safety Kurtis drummond were promoted to the active roster during the 2015 season. Bullough was made a starter at linebacker by the Texans for their game against Titans 2015.

Bullough was selected to the MaxPreps All-American second team. He was ranked 14th best linebacker prospect by SuperPrep and was ranked as the 17th best linebacker by Phil Steele. He was ranked as Michigan’s Top 10 seniors by the Detroit Free Press. He was selected as the Division 7 Player of the Year by The Associated Press. He received the Ron Holland Scholar-Athlete Award. He was ranked as nation’s 5th best middle linebacker prospect by Scout.com and ranked the 11th best linebacker prospect by Max Emfinger.

Bullough married fiancé Bailee in Traverse City on July 2, 2016; they had been engaged since Christmas Eve in 2015.

As a senior, he was elected team captain for the second year consecutively and was also selected by coaches to the All-Big Ten first-team. He was named to the NFF Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year and the All-America Third Team. Bullough’s last year ended with 76 tackles and 9.5 for loss.
