He studied composition and instrumentation for wind orchestra at the “Santa Cecilia”, Conservatoire of Rome. He won the Valentino Bucchi Prize with Melos in 1982 for soprano/orchestra. Franco Donatoni was a crucial figure in his life, and he helped him continue his education at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia as well as the Accademia Musica Chigiana di Siena. He attended the Darmstadter Ferienkurse in 1984. His composition Les Masques (Quattro Bagatelle flute viola and guitarist) was also awarded the Gaudeamus Prize in Amsterdam. He was chosen to represent Italy in the International Rostrum of Composers of UNESCO in 1987. He won the second prize in the International Competition Gian Francesco Malipiero, with In Corde, in 1988. He composed also several works commissioned by institutions and associations such as: RAI, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Biennale di Venezia, Ravenna Festival, Ville de Geneve, Fondazione Malipiero, Centro Studi Armando Gentilucci, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Nuova Consonanza.

He collaborates with the electroacoustic music centers Agon in Milan, Centro Ricerche Musicali, Rome, and Istituto Gramma, L’Aquila. 1995 was selected by IRCAM to represent the international stage. 1997 saw Manao Tuupao be named as a finalist in the 24th Electroacustique Music Contest of Bourges. 2009 saw Alba (for zarb/electronics) chosen by the International Computer Music Conference in Belfast. He joined the composers’ collective Edison Studio in Rome in 2001. This was one of the most active centers for producing electroacoustic musical music in Italy. With them, he tried a collective composition practice. Edison Studio’s first DVD was published in 2008 by the collaboration with Latini and Di Domenico. It produced the live soundtracks to silent films over the next years: Gli ultimi Girni di Pompei (1913), by Eleuterio Rodolfi; Ricatto (1929) by Alfred Hitchcock; Inferno (1911), by Francesco Bertolini and Giuseppe de Liguoro (awarded the “Premiospeciale AITS per il migliore Suono anno 2011” by the Associazione Italiena Tecnici del Sue (1919); Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1919); by Robert Wiene These two soundtracks were published by Cineteca di Bologna on DVD in 5.1 surround format in the “Il Cinema ritrovato” series in 2011. Marco Maria Gazzano has published a study on Edison Studio’s work: “Il silent movie e l’elettronica in relazione Intermediale”. Mauro Cardi, Edison Studio, participated in the International Computer Music Conference 2002 in Göthenburg and 2003 in Singapore.
