Vargas then returned to the USA and played college soccer with the Cougars at Barton Community College. Vargas played for the team for three more years, before transferring to Friends University in Wichita (Kansas) and playing for their team. He received a degree from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas in 2016 in physical education. He made 16 appearances during his one season with the team and had a GAA score of 1.049. He also played in the 2015 National Premier Soccer League season for FC Wichita while at Friends University. He played 14 games for the club during the season. He recorded 6 shutouts, and a.79 goals per game average. He also helped FC Wichita win the NPSL South Central Conference title that season. Many teams inquired about the possibility of signing him, including Major League Soccer clubs Columbus Crew SC and D.C.
