He killed seven people in Falun, Sweden, on June 11, 1994. He was second lieutenant in Sweden’s Army at the time. Twenty years after the murders, he was released from prison in June 2014.

Mattias Flink received several short-term monitored leaves from prison. In May 2007, he was granted unmonitored leave because he had behaved well during the other leaves. Family members and relatives of victims strongly opposed the leaves and expressed concern about what might happen again.

During the spring of 2008, Mattias Flink applied for parole to the District court of Örebro. On June 9, the court ruled that Flink must go through a psychiatric examination to determine whether he is likely to be dangerous to others before a decision on parole can be made. The examination by the Swedish National Board of Forensic Medicine (Rättsmedicinalverket) was finished by July 7. The victims’ families strongly opposed Flink’s possible release.

On July 7, 2010, Flink’s request to convert his sentence was approved by Örebro tingsrätt (district court). His punishment was set to 32 years imprisonment, which would have made him eligible for parole sometime in 2015, since prisoners are in Sweden normally released after two thirds of the set time. The decision, however, was appealed by the prosecutor, and on December 21, 2010, Flink’s punishment was adjusted to 36 years by Göta Court of Appeal, pushing his potential parole date to the summer of 2018. After yet another appeal, Flink’s punishment was adjusted to 30 years by the Supreme Court making his parole date to the summer of 2014, after serving 20 years in prison.

Flink experienced severe mental problems in 1994, including aggression, jealousy, sleep disorders, and paranoia. Flink suffered a complete mental breakdown. According to reports, he was “thrown out of a bar for bothering women”.

He then went home to change. He walked to his regiment in his field uniform. He armed himself with an Ak 5 assault rifle, 150 rounds of ammunition in NATO 5.56x45mm NATO caliber and a field uniform. Flink set off for Downtown Falun, where he shot six members of the Women’s Auxiliary Services. Flink shot the women randomly. He shot one man, one cyclist, and one security guard at a nearby crossing. Six victims were killed immediately and one victim died at the hospital. One victim survived the attack.

In January, 2008, Flink requested that his life sentence be limited to 24 years imprisonment. However, on September 3, 2008, Örebro municipal court rejected the request with the motivation that the circumstances regarding the case are “exceptionally difficult” and that a set time punishment has to greatly exceed 24 years.
