Goren inspired Drawe to take up filmmaking in 1988. He shot The Art of Being a Man (1989), using Russian black and white stock that was smuggled from East Germany into West-Berlin. In 1991, he established Kellerkino, a small cinema in Berlin-Kreuzberg that specialized in independent films. It screened early shorts by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck who would win an Oscar later for The Lives of Others.
Through a mutual friend, he met Serif Goren, a Turkish director who had previously directed Yol – The Path (1982), for Yilmaz Guney. Goren chose Berlin-Kreuzberg as the setting for his 1988 comedy Polizei, starring Kemal Sunal, a Turkish actor. Goren cast Drawe in the role of a small-time crook.

Drawe was born in a DEFA office at the border of Potsdam–Babelsberg, and West Berlin. He managed to escape to West Berlin with his father Hans Drawe (a former DEFA dramatist) and his mother in 1970. They risked their lives to jump over the Berlin Wall using an unsecured film ladder.
Drawe was a Berliner-Kreuzberg squatter at the beginning of 1980s. He took part in the fight to get affordable housing. This is the setting for his novel Wild Years, West Berlin.
After having shot The King of Kreuzberg (1990) and The Ivory Tower (1992) in Berlin, Drawe moved to New York City and worked as a journalist for Deutschlandradio Kultur , the German equivalent of NPR. Drawe’s radio features from around the world were brought to life by voice actor Christian Brückner, who provides the official German voice for Robert De Niro, thereby giving German listeners the impression that it was De Niro reporting.
