Matthew was the fourth-oldest of eight children in Miami-Dade County’s Overtown Section. Thomas was very poor growing up and found his niche in football, becoming a legend on the Miami gridiron. He earned the nickname “Big 6” and vowing to end the cycle of poverty within his family. Thomas attended Booker T. Washington High school in Miami, Florida. After high school, he was a consensus five-star recruit and was ranked as one of the top prospects in his class. On National Signing Day 2013, he committed to Florida State University in order to play college football.

Thomas was a Florida State freshman in 2013. He played in four games until he had to have season-ending shoulder surgery. He was issued a medical redshirt but did not participate in the National Championship Game that season. Thomas was removed from the National Championship Game for failing to pass a drug test. He was also suspended for six of the season’s first six games. Thomas was reinstated against Notre Dame after he had completed his suspension. He finished the season with 26 tackles and 2.5 TFLs. He also participated in the Rose Bowl that season, recording three solo tackles as well as one assisted tackle.

On January 2, 2019, Thomas signed a reserve/future contract with the Baltimore Ravens. He was waived on August 1, 2019.
