Matthew Andrew Petersen, born 27 March 1980, is an ex-American international rugby league footballer who starred for the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats of the Super League. Parramatta won the Minor Premiership in 2005 with 13 appearances by Petersen, but he didn’t play in any finals matches.
In 2007, Petersen was named as captain of the USA team for their 2008 Rugby League World Cup qualifying match against Samoa. He was awarded Man of the Match for the game, but could not stop the USA falling to defeat.
“Side-Show Bob” joined the Titans in 2007 for their first year in the NRL. He performed well and was well known as “Sideshow Bob” due to his thick, curly hair. Petersen was a player for the Belmont Steelers in Western Australia, which is a feeder club for North Queensland Cowboys. He was then called up to NRL in 2002. Petersen, who moved from North Queensland into the Parramatta Eels halfway through 2002, played for the Eels with some success up until 2006. Petersen was a key player in a scuffle at Parramatta Stadium against the Brisbane Broncos. Allan Langer had dropped his knees into Petersen. Petersen set a new club record for try scoring in a single match, during the 2003 round 12 game against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He was the first Parramatta player since 1988 to score four tries in one match.
Parramatta care-taker coach, Jason Taylor, dropped Petersen from the first- grade roster when he took over coaching duties in May, 2006, and demoted the under-performing winger to the Premier League, where he spent the rest of the season.
