Matthew Peter Nielsen, an Australian former professional basketball player, is currently the assistant coach of the Austin Spurs in the NBA G League. He was an assistant coach with the Perth Wildcats (NBL) between 2015 and 2019.

Nielsen started a European career in 2004 playing for PAOK Thessaloniki (Greece), Lietuvos Rytas (Lithuania), Valencia in Spain, Olympiacos Piraeus in Greece and Khimki, Russia.

During the 2013–14 NBL season, Nielsen served as a big-man coach for the Perth Wildcats.

On 10 October 2013, Nielsen was named in the Sydney Kings 25th Anniversary Team.

Nielsen was awarded the NBL Rookie-of-the Year Award in 1997 when he returned to the Sydney Kings. Nielsen played seven more seasons for the Kings, helping the club win the championships in 2003-2004. He averaged 17.5 points per game, 8.0 rebound, 2.6 assists and 1.5 blocks in 244 games over nine seasons with the Kings.

Nielsen was born and raised in Penrith, Sydney. He attended St Marys Senior High School three times per week. There, he had to be granted permission to leave early to train with the Sydney Kings. Nielsen, then 17, was a part of two Kings games in 1995. He moved to Canberra in 1996 to study at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Nielsen was a member of the junior national team that won the gold medal in the 1997 FIBA Under-21 World Championship. He was also part of the Australian senior men’s basketball team. He was a member of Australia’s senior national basketball team and won gold medals at three events: the 2001 Goodwill Games; the 2003 FIBA Oceanian Championship; and the 2005 FIBA Oceania Championship.

During the Boomers 2012 Olympic campaign, Australian Football League player Scott Pendlebury noted Nielsen’s athletic ability, and mentioned that he could have played in Australian Football League, had he not chosen to play basketball.
