Highmore was an alternate captain in QMJHL. However, he was rejected twice at the NHL Entry Draft. The second time was in his final year of eligibility. The Chicago Blackhawks signed him to a three year NHL contract in March 2017. He was an undrafted player. He was the last Sea Dogs player to earn a professional hockey contract, and he wasn’t drafted. Highmore, who had scored 34 goals and 89 points, was named Sea Dogs MVP at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. He was also awarded the Pepsi Top Scorer Award.
He attended the Blackhawks training camp prior to the 2019–20 season but was reassigned to the IceHogs. He was subsequently named an assistant captain alongside Jacob Nilsson and Tyler Sikura. After recording four goals and six assists in 17 games, Highmore was recalled to the NHL on November 26.
Highmore began the 2017-18 season as an AHL affiliate of the Blackhawks, the Rockford IceHogs. Highmore’s first professional hat-trick against the Iowa Wild was recorded on December 27, 2017. Highmore, along with his teammate Carl Dahlstrom, was named to the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic after leading his team’s points. Highmore was the first Rockford rookie who scored more than 20 goals during their rookie season, since Rockford joined Blackhawks in 2007. Highmore was called up to NHL on February 26, 2018, for the first-time. Highmore made his NHL debut March 1, 2018, against the San Jose Sharks, scoring a 7-2 win. In less than 13 minutes, he had two goals. Highmore scored his first NHL goal on March 10, 2018, in a 4-7 defeat to the Boston Bruins. After playing in 13 games, Highmore recorded 2 points and was reassigned by the AHL on February 27, 2018. After he tied for fourth in league goals and had 42 points, Highmore was named IceHogs’ Rookie of Year. Highmore’s 24th goal was the IceHogs’ season-highest goal total in the regular season before the 2018 Calder Cup playoffs.
