She then went on to study at University of Auckland and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
She declared her intention to retire prior to the 2005 election and didn’t stand for reelection.
In 1993, she was elected first to Parliament and won the seat of Gisborne. She won the Mahia seat in 1996, and the East Coast seat in 2002 and 1999. Moana Mackey, her daughter, joined her in Parliament in 2003. She was previously a real-estate agent before entering politics.

Janet Elsdon Mackey JP (nee Craig, born 14 June 1953) was a New Zealand politician. From 1993 to 2005, she was a Member in the New Zealand Parliament for Labour Party.
Mackey was a trustee for the Trust Bank Eastern and Central Community Trust and, from 1984 to 1990, was the chair of East Coast Regional Employment and Access Council. In 1988, she was elected justice of peace and in 1989 became a married celebrant.
