Haanappel was born 21 May 1994 with cerebral palsy right-hemiplegia after a prenatal stroke. Because of spasticity in his right arm, his disability severely affects his fine motor skills as well as his dexterity. Matthew was a Cerebral Palsy Education Centre child and is now an ambassador for the organization.

Haanappel is from a sporting family. His father Shane, an Australian basketball representative, is his brother Adam, a tennis player from around the world, and he is a cousin to Cadel Evans, a retired cyclist. From 2008 to 2011, Haanappel was a Croydon Secondary College student. He deferred his VCE in 2012 to be able to train more. He returned to Melba College in 2013 to finish his VCE.

Haanappel competed in his first national championship in 2010 and was selected for the Australian Youth Team. At his first international trip at the 2010 Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaften in Berlin, he earned a silver medal in the 50 m Youth Butterfly. Haanappel moved in late 2010 to the Nunawading Swimming Club to join Amanda Isaac and Rohan Taylor at the club’s Victorian Institute of Sport High Performance Program.

As an Age competitor he had three first-place finishes, two second-place finishes and three third-place finishes at the 2011 National Age Multi-Class Championships. He travelled to Germany for his second Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaften in Berlin, achieving three gold medals.

Haanappel made the decision to return to Lilydale Swimming Club with Anne Longridge as his coach. He was then promoted to the Junior Squad and Senior State Squads under Neil and Michael Davis. Haanappel was chosen to represent Victoria in the 2008 Pacific School Games, Canberra. He received silver and bronze medals.

Matthew Anthony “Matt” Haanappel OAM, is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. He was born in Wantirna in Victoria in 1994 and now resides in the eastern suburbs. He is paralysed from the right side of his brain due to cerebral palsy. Haanappel represented Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships. He also participated in the 2014 Pan Pacific Para Swimming Championships. He is a member of the Camberwell Grammar School’s Aquatic club.

Haanappel began swimming at the Lilydale Swimming Club in 2005. Anne Longridge, the club’s junior coach and Head Coach of Swimming Victoria SWD, was Haanappel’s first coach. He was a competitor at the 2005 Victorian Primary School Swimming Championships, where he falsely started in his first race.

In 2009, Haanappel broke Australian Age Disability Records with Swimming Australia. Haanappel was selected as the Victorian representative for the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships. Subsequently, Haanappel switched coaches to Lawrence Krauter at Lilydale Swimming Club.
