He plays for Basford United in the Northern Premier League. He previously played for Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion as well as Cheltenham Town, Hibernians, Buxton, Shaw Lane Aquaforce, Gainsborough Trinity, and Cheltenham Town. A medial knee ligament injury has ended his career.

Forest released Thornhill in January 2011 with manager Billy Davies referring to “good young players here that need to move on; they need to go to have a new start.”

Thornhill started his first Forest game when he stepped in at the last minute to replace Chris Cohen in the heart of midfield. He has since been battling for a midfield spot, scoring his second goal of the season in a 1–1 draw at Southend. He helped The Reds finish second in the 2007–08 season in League One, gaining promotion to the Championship. With The Reds gaining promotion, manager Colin Calderwood commented that Thornhill would be given the chance to impress the following season.

He signed for Shaw Lane Aquaforce, then of the Northern Counties East Football League, in July 2014. He won promotion with the team to the Northern Premier League Division One South at the end of the 2014–15 season. Thornhill was club captain at Aqauaforce the following season as they reached the play-off final, which the Barnsley club lost to Coalville Town.

Thornhill signed a contract to join Hibernian, a Scottish Premier League club, on 21 January 2011. This was subject to a medical. Hibernian confirmed the transfer just days later and assigned the player squad number 26. A medial knee ligament injury ended Thornhill’s 2010-11 season prematurely. Thornhill was let go from his contract in January 2012. In his first year at Hibs, he had only made 15 appearances.

Thornhill was a substitute for Kris Commons at Chester City in the League Cup’s first round. Forest won 4-2 on penalties. Five days later, he made his League debut as a substitute in the second half for Kris Commons. The youngster made his League debut against Leyton Orient on 12 January 2008.
