He signed with the Edmonton Oilers for the 2009-2010 season but only played 19 games for the AHL’s Springfield Falcons. He was then released and never returned to the Oilers. Nickerson tried out with Esbjerg IK, a Danish hockey team, but was unsuccessful in securing a contract. The Fife Flyers announced the signing of Matt Nickerson to the Rapid Solicitors Elite Ice Hockey League 2013/14 season. Nickerson quickly became a fan favourite at Fife. His tough edge and determination added much-needed backbone to a team that had been bullied on the ice previously. He played 45 games during his first season and was a key part of Fife’s run to the EIHL playoff semi-final game. Fife lost to Belfast by one goal. Fife supporters admired his unwavering support for his teammates. However, he did draw the attention EIHL referees in December 2013. He was given a 12-game suspension for fighting during a Braehead Clan game. Nickerson, along with his team mates, visited Kinross’ C.H.A.S. children’s hospice. Nickerson was touched by the charitable work of the charity and offered to let his fans shave off their trademark beard in order to raise funds for the hospice. This charity act was well-received by the UK hockey community.
Nickerson, who had been in SM-liiga for a brief time, returned to North America for 2006-07 and played for the Idaho Steelheads and Iowa Stars of AHL, both affiliates the Dallas Stars. During his twelve games in Idaho, Nickerson was suspended for 16 games. Nickerson, after a season in North America was over, returned to Pori where he joined Assat for his second career. He was suspended for three games on October 20th 2007 for attacking Teemu Laine, a forward for TPS. He also attacked Kevin Kantee, an Ilves defenseman, in the locker area of Assat arena’s Assat arena. This resulted in a three-game suspension. On October 27, he was given an additional five game suspension. Nickerson was a fan favorite in Pori, Finland during his stints there. Nickerson was transferred to Ilves in February 2008. He was penalized for fighting in the Ilves Blues game on February 4.

Nickerson was a player for the Texas Tornado, North American Hockey League in the 2001-02 season and 2002-03. Nickerson was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the third round of the NHL Entry Draft 2003 with the 99th pick. This was Nickerson’s final season with the team. Nickerson was drafted by Clarkson University in the third round. He accumulated 179 penalty minutes over 38 games. Nickerson was granted a three-year entry-level contract. He then played in Victoriaville. He was forced to play in the NHL lockout and was sent to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Victoriaville Tigres. After that, he turned pro in Finland’s SM-liiga with Assat.
He began 2005-2006 at the Dallas Stars training camp, scoring a goal against Ty Conklin in an NHL exhibition game against the Edmonton Oilers. Nickerson was then assigned in Iowa of the AHL, where he played four exhibition games and registered one fighting major before eventually ending up in Pori (Finland). Nickerson set a league record of 236 penalty minutes during his Assat debut season. Nickerson was given a match penalty in October 2005 for fighting. He was also suspended for three games on November 2nd 2005 for unsportsmanlike conduct and fighting.
On 3 June 2017, after two years with the Belfast Giants, Nickerson joined EIHL newcomers Milton Keynes Lightning ahead of their inaugural Elite League season. During his time with the Lightning, Nickerson received a 20 game ban for abusing an official and punching a fan, and was released by the club the following day.
