Groat was a member of Groat joined the Wests Tigers NYC Cup team in the year 2011. In round 12, he made his debut in the first grade following a last- minute accident to Wade McKinnon. He had played in a lower-grade game, Groat made his way off the bench during the final 5 minutes. In the following campaign, Groat became a regular on the first team as he played off the bench. Wests Tigers won 8 of the 10 games played in the 2011 season.
On April 16, 2015, Groat made a signing with English club Doncaster.
In 2017, Groat returned to Australia and signed with Queensland Cup side the Central Queensland Capras. On 16 January 2018, Groat was released by Central Queensland and signed with the Easts Tigers.
Groat was out of the team at the beginning of the 2013 season due to an injuries. Trainer Mick Potter said, “Matt got his ankle, foot and toe caught in the ground and got some weight on the back of it. He had been working hard and his shape was looking better too.” He did not play any of the first grade games in 2013.

In a game in the early part of 2012 Groat was unconscious after an attack from Brisbane Broncos forward Ben Te’o. The incident was seen as to be a “test case” on how the NRL Judiciary would treat players who came into contact with the head while attempting to perform an shoulder-charge. A few weeks later, Groat played with New South Wales in the first Under-20s State of Origin match, however, he was unable to make another first-grade appearance during the remainder of the season.
The month of September 2013 saw it reported that Groat was signed by the Dragons for at least one season. Groat did not make any first-grade appearances at the club and the following year, he signed with Salford.
On 29 January 2016, Groat was released by Doncaster and signed with Dewsbury.
