Toshack made his appearance in the grade for Norths to play Parramatta at the Round 21 of of 1992. in 1994 Toshack had a great season in which the club placed 2nd in the table and made it to the finals. Norths beat the defending champions Brisbane but fell 22-9 to Canberra at the start of the final.
The year 1995 was a memorable one for Toshack. Toshack had 21 games in the 1995 season as Norths were in the finals, but they were eliminated within the first week in the match against Newcastle. 1996 would be the last year that Toshack played as a player with Norths since the club finished third in the table and made it to an initial final with St George but fell short of a grand final spot.
In 2017, North Sydney created a new tournament called the “Matt Toshack Cup” in honor of the former player.
