Sordell made his debut as a professional with Watford during the 2009-10 season. He was an 82nd minute substitute to Nathan Ellington in Watford’s 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on August 15th, 2009. He scored his debut goal in his 3rd appearance with the club 10 days later, in the League Cup second round encounter against Leeds United. When Watford in a 1-0 deficit, Sordell scored an equaliser in the 87th minute of the game to make the game go into extra time, but the team went on be defeated the match 2-1. The result was his first appearance for the club the following day on the 29th of August, in Watford’s 1-1 draw away to Swansea City.
Sordell made his England under-21 debut as a substitute for Nathan Delfouneso on 1 September 2011 during the Young Lions’ 6–0 2013 European Under-21 Championship qualifying win over Azerbaijan at his home ground, Watford’s Vicarage Road stadium. He made a goalscoring first start for England four days later as his side beat Israel 4–1 in a friendly at Oakwell, Barnsley.
Sordell was first capped by England at under-20 level for their friendly against France on 9 February 2011. The game was held at Shrewsbury Town’s New Meadow stadium, with Sordell amongst the starting eleven. He scored England’s only goal on his only appearance for the side as they were defeated 2–1 by France.
Following his debut for Watford on August 29th, 2009 Sordell did not play the first team until February of 2010, when he was loaned for League One club Tranmere Rovers for the initial month. Sordell got his Tranmere debut on the 6th of February as substitute for Terry Gornell in their 1-0 home loss to Oldham Athletic. He scored the first and only goals for Tranmere on the 20th of February when he scored in an 2-1 win against Tranmere over Leyton Orient. The loan was extended to two months on the 2nd of March, and he played eight times on the pitch in the league.

After progressing through the Watford’s junior system in 2007, and playing in their reserve and under-18 teams, Sordell joined Isthmian League Premier Division club Wealdstone for work experience in November of 2008, and made his debut in the team’s 1-1 FA Trophy defeat by Tiverton Town on the 1st of November. His first strike for the team came in only 30 seconds of the game against Maidstone United on 15 November with a 3-2 win. He scored two goals in five league games. In the final game of the season Sordell received his debut professional deal which was signed in the month of April in 2009.
Sordell began his career at Fulham before joining Watford for a two-year college scholarship in 2007. He made his debut for the club in the 2009-10 season. He also played on loan during League One with Tranmere Rovers in the same season. After scoring 27 goals across the 81 matches played for Watford over two and a half years, Sordell earned a PS3 million transfer into the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers in January 2012. He scored only eight goals in his 29 appearances for the club. He played the entire 2013-14 season in loan at Charlton Athletic. He was back in Burnley’s Premier League with Burnley for the 2014-15 season, but was mainly utilized as a substitute. After scoring just one goal in 20 matches for Burnley the club, his contract was terminated in September 2015, after which the player was able for League One club Colchester United as well as at the conclusion of the season, Coventry City. After six months at Coventry then he joined Burton Albion as part of an exchange deal. After a loan with Northampton Town, he retired at the age of 28 in the year the year 2019.
For the 2010–11 season, Sordell was a regular fixture in Malky Mackay’s starting eleven. Sordell opened his account for the season with a goal in Watford’s 3–0 win over Aldershot on 10 August 2010. He then scored four goals in the course of three games, beginning with both Watford’s goals in their 2–2 Vicarage Road draw with Doncaster Rovers on 11 September after coming on as a substitute; the opener in their 2–0 win at Bristol City; and one of Watford’s six goals in their 6–1 thrashing of Millwall on 18 September. He also scored in Championship wins at Sheffield United on 2 October and at home to Ipswich Town on 19 October.

Sordell played in both England’s play-off wins over Serbia in October 2012, but his next appearance didn’t arrive until March 2013 when he replaced Raheem Sterling in England’s 3–0 friendly win over Romania.
