Martyn Bennett (17 February 1971 – 30 January 2005) was a musician from Canada and Scotland who played a pivotal role in the development of contemporary Celtic fusion, a blend with traditional Celtic and contemporary music. He was a violinist, piper and composer as well as producer. He was an innovator , and his music transcended cultural and musical boundaries. With dreadlocks on at the peak of his performance career His exuberant performances resulted in descriptions like “the techno piper”. The diagnosis of a serious illness at the age of 30 slowed the live shows, but the singer-songwriter completed two more recordings in his studio. He died 15 months after the release the fifth studio album Grit.
His performances also attracted the attention of. It was not common for pipes to wear Dreadlocks. This style of image fit to the social and musical boundaries he crossed. Sometimes, he was referred to by the name of “the techno piper”. He was a part of T in the Park in 1998. Scottish famous people were present at his show on stage at Buddha Bar in Paris, prior to Scotland competing against Brazil during the first game in the 1998 World Cup. In 1999 he moved to Mull, where he met Dundonian musical Martin Low who helped him with his next work. Rykodisc had now become part of Palm Pictures. In 2000 he released the album Hardland on his own Cuillin label. He appeared at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 2000, giving an electrifying performance. A reviewer wrote in Mojo that “Scots music has never sounded like this before. No music has ever sounded like this before. Half the audience fled in fear of their lives.” Bennett sold a thousand CDs after the set.
The album he released was his debut entitled Martyn Bennett album in the year 1995 on Eclectic which is a small, independent label from Edinburgh. He recorded the album in just seven days in the Castle Sound studios in Pencaitland. Floret Silva Undique incorporates a poem written by Hamish Henderson. Henderson said “What brave new music”. The album was the “dramatic” impact on Scottish music. He composed the live score to David Harrower’s show Knives In Hens. He performed at the event that was held on the grounds of Stirling Castle for the European premiere of the film Braveheart on September 3, 1995. He returned to Glasgow’s Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in January of 1996. After writing music scores for stage and TV He then toured to America and was accompanied by Wolfstone. At the age of 15 at the age of fifteen, he relocated into Edinburgh together with his mom. He was offered a spot at the City of Edinburgh Music School and was the first classical musician to have done this. In the three years were there, he studied violin and piano. In 1990, he joined the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) in Glasgow where he studied piano and violin. In the RSAMD, he came across Kirsten Thomson who was a student at the piano in the year before who became an ensemble member, and later his wife. The year he was in the final academic year,, he was diagnosed with cancer of the testicle however he was able to recover from the illness within six months finishing his studies in 1993.
Bennett was heavily influenced by the 1990s’ dance music scene, and frequently was a frequent visitor to clubs. He collaborated with Martin Swan’s Mouth Music project, combining traditional Gaelic songs as well as modern instruments. He performed his first show on stage at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 14 January 1994, supporting the group. Bennett was just a teenager at the time Swan first saw Bennett playing.
He released Bothy Culture in 1998 on the Rykodisc label. One composition Hallaig takes its name from the poem by the Gaelic bard Sorley MacLean, incorporating a sample of MacLean reading the poem. Bothy culture topped the US college radio charts. The album came close to winning a Mercury Music Prize nomination.

Bennett died at the Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh from cancer on 30 January 2005, aged 33. News of his death spread among revellers attending the last night of Celtic Connections. The news was held back from the Edinburgh Music School pupils who were recording Mackay’s memoirs the following day. His funeral was held on Mull.
