Martti Koskenniemi Biography

Martti Koskenniemi is one of the most popular and richest Diplomat who was born on March 18, 1953 in Turku, Southwest Finland, Finland. The Gentle Civilizer of Nations: The Rise and fall of International Law 1870-1960 (2001) is a book with two goals. The first one is to provide an intellectual historical perspective on international law and also to provide an analysis of the historical record. The second one is to present a sociology of the field of international law, based on the biographical study that focus on Hersch Lauterpacht Carl Schmitt and Hans Morgenthau.

Prior to that, he was a Global Professor of Law in the New York University, and an active part of the International Law Commission (2002-2006). He worked for the Finnish Diplomatic Service in the period 1978-1996, and then as Director of the Division of International Law. Finland was represented by him for the International Court of Justice in the Passage through the Great Belt case (Finland v. Denmark) (1991-1992)

From 1997 until 2003, from 1997 to 2003, he was a judge on the administrative court that is part of the Asian Development Bank.

Martti Koskenniemi (born on March 18, 1953) is a Finnish international lawyer and diplomat from the past. He is now a Professor of International Law in the University of Helsinki and Director of the Erik Castren Institute of International Law and Human Rights and Centennial Professor in the Law Department of the London School of Economics. He is well-known for his critique of international law. He was in 2008-2009 the position of a the distinguished guest Goodhart Professor in the Faculty of Law, Cambridge University. In 2011, Koskenniemi was the Peace of Utrecht professor at Utrecht University. In 2014, he was appointed to be a Corresponding Fellow in the British Academy. Koskenniemi is currently an Academy Professor at Finland’s Academy of Finland.
