In 2010, Martin Strel and his son Borut Strel founded a company that offers swimming adventure holidays in the Mediterranean and at Lake Powell, Arizona. They currently offer swimming adventure holiday tours at Lake Powell, Arizona, in Slovenia (Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, and the Soča River), on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast swimming from island to island, in Montenegro exploring Adriatic fjords and coves, and cruising Mediterranean Turkey. Strel takes part in some trips.
He plans to swim across Lake Arenal on September 29, 2010 as part of his visit to an environmentalist international film festival in Costa Rica. He plans to swim about 6 kilometres from shore and then back to his starting point.
In 2007 2007, the Nile was proposed for his river of the future however, Strel stated, “I am not going to do the Nile. It’s long but not challenging enough, it is just a small creek. The Amazon is much more mighty.”

Strel was born and raised in Mokronog located situated in Mokronog, in the Slovenian Region that is part of Lower Carniola, then part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The first two swims he took were on the Krka River (105 kilometers) in his native country in just 28 minutes in 1992. He also swam also the border Kolpa river (62 kilometers (39 miles)) within 16 minutes in 1993. He also raced in the Danube River (2,860 kilometres (1,780 miles)) and set the world’s longest distance record for swimming (3,004 km (1,867 miles)) in the span of 58 days. On July 1, 2001, the swimmer set another world record504.5 kilometres 504.5 kilometers (313.5 miles) of continuous swimming in the Danube in just 84 hours and 10 minutes. He shed 40 pounds.
The year 2002 was the first time he paddled through the entirety of the Mississippi River (3,885 kilometres (2,414 miles)) in just 68 days. He also paddled in the Argentine Parana River (3,998 kilometres (2,484 miles)). On the 10th of June, 2004 Martin began swimming through the Yangtze River (4,003 kilometres (2,487 miles) one of the largest rivers in Asia and the third- longest on the planet) located in China. He made it to Shanghai within 40 days, on July 30, 2004 one day ahead of schedule.
Strel was the subject and star of a feature documentary entitled Big River Man directed by the acclaimed art-house director John Maringouin. The film, which won a Best Cinematography prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, was critically praised for its extraordinary blend of comedy and drama. The film chronicled Strel’s 3,300 mile historic swim of the Amazon River.
