After graduation, Altes worked as a space policy analyst at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. He quit Congress to become the director of program management for the Pegasus air-launched space rocket within Orbital Sciences Corporation. The year 1991 was the time Altes joined Orbital Sciences’ Orbital Sciences team that was presented with the National Medal of Technology (the United States’ highest award for technological achievements) in the name of the President George H. W. Bush for the development of Pegasus. He is a co-recipient of the 1990 Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Trophy for Current Achievement in Aerospace.

In 1997, Altes’s The Little Book of Bad Business Advice was published by St. Martin’s Press.

In 2001, a sequel, If You Jam the Copier, Bolt was published by Andrews McMeel Publishing.

In the late 1990s, Altes changed careers from engineering to his career in entertainment and writing.
