Martin Schumacher graduated from the University of Dortmund with a certificate in mathematics and statistics in 1974. He remained in Dortmund and completed his PhD in 1977. In the years 1975-79 as well as 1983 and 1986, he initially was a research assistant for Dr. Siegfried Schach, and later as Professor of Statistics at the Department of Science. Between these intervals in Dortmund and in the period 1979-83 in Heidelberg in Heidelberg’s Institute for Medicinal Statistics at the University of Heidelberg, headed by Herbert Immich. In Heidelberg, he was professor in 1982 by submitting a an academic thesis that focused on the study of the survival period. In 1984, he served as an assistant professor at the Department of Biostatistics of the University of Washington in Seattle, WA (USA). Following his return to the department of statistics at the University of Dortmund he was given a position as a professor within the Institute for Medical Biometry and Statistics of University Medical Center Freiburg. He was the director of the institute in April 1986 until his retirement in May 2017.

Soon after he started his new job immediately after he started his job in Freiburg the center was established to support the methodological aspects of studies in therapy, it was the first one in its type to be found in an German medical university. In 1999 one of the first coordination centers for clinical studies (short KKS = Koordinierungszentrum fur Klinische Studien) in Germany was founded at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg on the initiative of Martin Schumacher.
