Martin Kiszko is one of the most popular and richest British composer who was born on February 9, 1958 in Leeds, England, United Kingdom. Martin Edmund Kiszko (born 9 February 1958) is a British composer, musicologist poet, and librettist. Most famous for his television and film scores.
The fascination with the live interaction between music and images has inspired him to explore and develop using Soundbeam – an ultrasonic set of beams which function as invisible keyboards that can be found in space. Each beam can contain up to 128 invisibly divided divisions, each one can be used as a stop and start button that turns on and project a movie sequence, or a sequence of stills, or trigger a note or sequence of music. His work, along in conjunction with The Soundbeam Project, led to the development of Inua Live, a live-performance work that was awarded the 2004 Musician of the Year (Community as well as education) by The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.
As well as his film and television work, Kiszko’s major concert works include two cantatas: Sea Star with a libretto by poet Anne Ridler OBE, and A Radius of Curves – a work with his own libretto and accompanying film – which tells the story of the construction of Brunel’s Great Western Railway.
Kiszko completed his PhD dissertation, “The Origins and Place of the Balalaika in Russian Culture, its Migration to the USA, and the Dissemination of Balalaika Orchestras in America with Particular Reference to the Kasura and Kutin Collections at the University of Illinois,” in 1999. The research paper he wrote about the instrument “The Balalaika – a Reappraisal” was the first paper to appear in publications in the West after 1900. It appeared within The Galpin Society Journal. Then he created the entry for Balalaikas within The New Grove Dictionary of Music.

Kiszko’s interest in film music were cultivated by the veteran music composer Edward Williams, who was guided by the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and British conductor Muir Mathieson. Kiszko worked with Williams in 1979 and beyond when the two began working on Williams Album Music for Life on Earth for the BBC David Attenborough series of the identical title. They also developed a tour multi-media live performance group, performing live shows where musicians transformed the video and sound in real-time. The group has grown to become the multi-media and music organization Elektrodome.
The popularity of Kiszko grew because of his introduction to his BBC Natural History Unit to the possibility of sampling indigenous instruments in other countries through Realms of the Russian Bear. He pioneered the method by recording instrumentalists of the Former Soviet Republics in the Melodia Recording Studios, Moscow in 1991. The recordings were then inserted in keyboard samples. Then, his fascination with the epic scale and palette of symphonic scores allowed his to open his BBC Natural History Unit to the use of Eastern European orchestras in the mid-nineties. In 2008, Kiszko came back to electro-acoustic palette he used in his earlier work in the score of Andrew Piddington’s movie The Killing of John Lennon.
Since 2010 Kiszko has also pursued his interests in environmentalism and wrote two collections of poetry on eco themes: “Green Poems for a Blue Planet” and “Verse for the Earth” both illustrated by Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park. Kiszko’s one man show based on the books has been performed in China, Dubai, Los Angeles, Malta, three times in India, around the UK, and at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2016 the University of Bristol awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters for his work.
