Martin Hodge (born 4 February 1959 in Southport, Lancashire) is a English ex- professional footballer. He was goalkeeper with Plymouth Argyle, Everton, Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester City, Hartlepool United and Rochdale. His career ran between 1977 and 1996. During that time, he played in 602 league and cup games.

Hodge’s move to PS250,000 Leicester was not a huge success, as he strained an abdominal muscle in his first game and was out for several months. Hodge played in 80 games over three years before making the move back to Hartlepool at the end of the season of 1991 where he was there in the area for two more years, after which he joined Rochdale for a short time. In 1994, in the summer, he returned to his former club Plymouth and played for two years and was also involved as a coach for the youth team prior to retiring to professional soccer in May of 1996.

Hodge was discovered in the eyes of Plymouth Argyle while playing for the amateur team Southport Trinity and was given an opportunity to test his club, the Devon Club. Hodge signed on as an apprentice to Argyle and was able to graduate from their youth program to debut in the season 1977-1978. He became a professionally in January 1977 at the time he was turning 18 years older. He played in five games in 1977-78, and later forced his into the first team, becoming the goalkeeper of regular duty for 1978-79. Argyle was a fairly average year within Division Three that year but Hodge’s performances caught the eye at Everton and he was signed by the club in July of 1979 for 135,000 pounds. Hodge was 20 years old. Hodge was hired by Everton as a second-choice keeper in place of George Wood, however Hodge was able to get into the team’s first squad in November of 1979 thanks to his early success and was a part of 23 league games during the season, as well as the FA Cup semi-final against West Ham United. Hodge’s opportunities were stifled by an arrival by Neville Southall and he had periods of the loan of Preston North End, Oldham Athletic and Gillingham before making the move into Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 1983, in the form of a PS50,000 contract.

Hodge was a regular selection by then Wednesday director Howard Wilkinson in that he was a player that had showed early promise, but lost his footing a bit. Hodge was not thought to be the first option for Wednesday during the 1983-84 season and Iain Hesford expected to be the number one goalie. But a combination of Hodge’s excellent form in pre-season and Hesford his weight issues ensured that Hodge was a part of the first game that season, in the match against Swansea City and never looked back. The time he spent in the Sheffield Wednesday team Sheffield Wednesday was excellent he played for 214 successive League and Cup games, a club record, beating his previous best of only 189 in addition to being one of the Wednesday team that was promoted into Division One in 1983-84 and afterwards enjoyed a number of good seasons after back to their top division.

In the summer of 1996 Hodge returned to Sheffield Wednesday as goalkeeping coach. He later also took charge of the reserve team before being released by the club in July 2004, when he moved to Leeds United to be their goalkeeping coach. With the advent of new Leeds manager Dennis Wise in October 2006, Martin Hodge was relieved of his duties as goalkeeping coach and left the club. He currently works as head of recruitment for Burnley
