The year 2012 was the time he received an honorary doctorate from his university, the Ion Ionescu de la Brad University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Iasi in Romania. In 2015 Gerzabek was appointed into the Academia Europaea and the German Academy of Engineering (acatech) and was given an honorary Decoration of Honour in Gold for his services for the Republic of Austria by the Federal Republic of Austria. In 2016, Gerzabek was appointed an honorary member of IUSS (International Union for Soil Sciences).
In June 2017 Hubert Hasenauer was elected next rector of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences; he succeeded Martin Gerzabek in February 2018.
He is an active member of the Board of Directors of the Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS) which he was presided from 2009 until 2010. The year 2009 was the time that Gerzabek got appointed a corresponding member to the natural and mathematical sciences division of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he has been vice president of AAER (Austrian Association of Research in Agriculture) since 2009.

Gerzabek was a student of agriculture in addition to plant growth in the course of BOKU the BOKU University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna and was awarded the “Diplom Ingenieur” in 1985. Two years later, having completed his dissertation work titled: Plant Availability of Magnesium (German: Die Pflanzenverfugbarkeit von Magnesium) he graduated as a “Dr. nat. Techn.” Doctorate in technological and natural sciences. He also studied in The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. From 1984 until 1993, Gerzabek was an assistant researcher in the Research Centre Seibersdorf (now AIT, Austrian Institute of Technology) in the Institute of Agriculture as head of the soil research group. After finishing his habilitation in the area of Soil Sciences that was based on his research on soil contaminants’ behavior, Gerzabek was asked to lead the research department for agriculture at AIT. From 1997 to 2003 he was the head of the department of environmental research. In 2001 the department was renamed the newly-created Chair in Environmental Toxicology and Isotope Application in the Institute for Soil Research, Department of Forest and Soil Science at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. From October 2003 until Jan. 2010, Gerzabek was employed as the Vice President of Research for the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, from January 2009 until January 2010 as the Managing Director. From February 2010 until January 2018, the position of Rector was held by the university. He was the founder President of the Network of Life Sciences Universities of Central and South Eastern Europe (ICA-CASEE) since the year 2010 and from 2010 until 2016 the position was vice-president for ICA, which is the European Association of Life Science Universities. He was vice-president in 2011 and served as vice-president. In 2012, he became head of the Danube Rectors Conferencing.
Gerzabek has been awarded numerous prizes for his research including his “Pro Merito” badge of distinction in gold in recognition of exceptional achievements in the protection of radiation in 2004. The year 2006 was the time he was awarded the distinction of honorary membership to the Austrian Soil Science Association for extraordinary accomplishments in soil science in Austria and, in 2011, the Emil Ramann Medal from the German Soil Science Society. In 2011 Gerzabek was awarded three honorary doctorates, including at his home university, the Georgian State Agrarian University in Tbilisi as well as in the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague and the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca.
In 2015, Gerzabek was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria.
