Sharp attended the high school of Tulia, Texas. Sharp was a 1974 graduate of Wayland Baptist University in Plainview. She received her master’s diploma in 1976 at West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M University) in Canyon.
Sharp was named as the coach in charge for Sharp’s Lady Raiders in 1982. Through the majority of the 1980s Sharp’s Lady Raiders were the second-best team in the Southwest Conference, behind the Texas Longhorns under Jody Conradt. But they were dominant in the last few years of SWC’s existence. They won the final five regular season championships consecutively (four in a row, two jointly) as well as three conference championships. Her most successful squad was her 1992-1993 squad which was headed by Sheryl Swoopes. They took home its first NCAA championship for the Texas Tech team in any sport. Following the time that Texas Tech became a charter member of the Big 12 Conference in 1996, Sharp added three more regular season championships and two tournament wins.
