Broomes was signed by Sheffield Wednesday, who at that time were in the First Division, on 13 December 2001. On Wednesday, he played 18 league appearances and scored just one goal. However, he was let go after the 2001-02 campaign.

Broomes then spent most of the pre-season at Championship club Burnley. However, on 7 August 2002 he signed for Lancashire rivals and fellow Championship club, Preston North End. Manager Craig Brown was impressed with Broomes and signed him on a three-year contract. He played sixty-nine league games for the club in a three-year spell.

In August 2005, he signed a three-year contract with fellow Championship club, Stoke City in a swap deal which involved Lewis Neal moving from Stoke to Preston. Broomes played in 42 games, mainly at full-back, not his natural position, and scored twice as the club finished in 13th place in the 2005–06 season.

Broomes participated in the England under-19s. Broomes was drafted to the England-under-21 team during 1998-97 season. He was a two-time player in the U21s. He participated in the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship, playing in two games during the time his team England Under-20 team reached the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Broomes began his professional career as a player in the club of Blackburn Rovers. He was signed by Rovers director Kenny Dalglish on 1 August 1994, however at first Broomes was not able to break into the squad within Ewood Park. On the 22nd of January, 1997, the club loaned him out for Swindon Town where he made 12 appearances, scoring once at Birmingham City in a two-month loan period.

He also worked as an sweeper (leading to the nickname “Broomes, the sweeper”) however, he was able to play left-back too. The first time he played was in 1994 at Premier League club Blackburn Rovers and played in the team that won the championship in 1994-95, however he didn’t play any games throughout the season. While at Rovers the player was in loan at Swindon Town, Queens Park Rangers and Grimsby Town. In September 2001, he scored the goal that gave Grimsby the victory against Liverpool at the League Cup third round. Then he went on to sign with Sheffield Wednesday permanently before moving towards Preston North End, Stoke City, Blackpool, Crewe Alexandra and Tranmere Rovers. He was dropped from the professional field at the close year 2010-11 when He signed with Clitheroe. The time he spent at the club was short and he was able to move back up the leagues, joining Conference North club Altrincham. He quit Alty at the close in the season 2011-2012. As being a Blackburn footballer, Broomes was capped twice each time by England’s England U20 as well as England U21 teams.

In the 1997–98 season new Rovers manager Roy Hodgson gave the defender five appearances in the first team. In the following two years he made twenty-six appearances. In the 2000–01 season, he was loaned out again, this time to Queens Park Rangers in October 2000 where he made five appearances in a one- month loan spell. After falling out of favour under new manager Graeme Souness, on 7 September 2001 he was loaned out to Grimsby Town for three months, where he played eighteen times and scored in a 2–1 away win over holders Liverpool in the League Cup. He had scored his first goal for Grimsby in the previous round against Sheffield United. He then returned to Blackburn and following their promotion back to the Premier League in the 2001–02 season, Broomes was released on a free transfer on 12 December 2001.

He signed for Altrincham on 9 January 2012, making his debut against Hinckley United. He went off injured just before the half hour mark.
