While playing for the St. Thomas Raiders high school tennis team, he took home six High school championships in Class 3A including two at No. 2 singles One at No. 1 singles with three of them at No. 1 doubles.
On the 24th of May in the year 2013 began, Merklein appointed as assistant coach at assistant coach at the University of Florida men’s tennis assistant coach.

Merklein was awarded an athletic scholarship that allowed him to attend an athletic scholarship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he was a member of the Florida Gators tennis team for men playing in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as well as Southeastern Conference (SEC) competition between 1991 and 1994. As a Gator Merklein was awarded the NCAA national championship doubles title in 1993 with his the partner David Blair in 1993. The next season, Merklein was awarded the NCAA national singles championship title in 1994, dominating the field with only losing one set. Merklein was four-time All-American as well as a three-time All SEC selection, and was named the SEC Player of the Year in 1994. Merklein was inducted into University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as the “Gator Great” in 2005.
Merklein made his professional debut in 1994. He won four doubles titles in his playing career. He was a winner at all four majors. In July 1997 He was ranked at the top of singles in the world at No. 160. He also achieved his highest doubles ranking in January 12th, 2004 when he became the world’s No. 37.
