In August of 2015, Tsalmpouris signed a five-year contract with the Greek Basket League club AEK Athens. Tsalmpouris was then automatically draft- eligible two years earlier because he had played one full year in professional basketball just after his first season playing NCAA Division I college basketball in addition to playing for a new national basketball league prior to playing in the NCAA basketball tournament. Therefore, he was automatically included in his 2016 NBA Draft, but was not drafted until the second round.

In 2017, he was loaned by AEK to the Greek club Kolossos Rodou.

The 2014-2015 season was the time that Tsalmpouris was a player in the 2014-15 season of Division I basketball in the NCAA for his Iowa State Cyclones team. The team was home to the 7th player with a height of 7 feet in the history of the school. He was in the team for 8 games with an average of 1.4 scores, 0.8 rebounds, 0.3 assists along with 0.1 steals per contest for 4.4 hours per game. In August 2015, following playing in one season for Iowa State, Tsalmpouris left the schooland went back in Greece for a professional career.
