He was picked as the 18th player overall during 2011’s NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, and he was also picked to be selected by Vityaz Chekhov, in the five-round (112th overall) of the 2011 KHL Junior Draft.

In the 2016-17 campaign when he was with the AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, and unable to be a part of the Blackhawks roster after four seasons in the organization, McNeill was traded along with a fourth-round selection conditionally with the Dallas Stars in exchange for the return of Johnny Oduya on February 28 in 2017.

McNeill first participated in an international tournament during his first international event, the World U-17 Hockey Challenge for Canada Pacific.
