In January 2008, he returned to England together with Barrow in Barrow of the Conference North. The team won the league in May of 2008. Barrow won 1-0 against Staylybridge Celtic 1-1 to be promoted to the Conference National via the Conference North play-offs. Boyd was a vital player in the Barrow squad throughout their first two campaigns as part of the Conference National, culminating in Barrow’s 2-1 win against Stevenage during the 2009-10 FA Trophy final. The match itself Boyd was substituted for Paul Rutherford with just ten minutes of extra time left, Jason Walker having already scored the winning goal for Barrow just within three minutes of the match.
Boyd was appointed Celtic Nation player-manager in July 2014; at the time of his appointment the club were undergoing a crisis after a moneyed investor withdrew his support for the club. The club finished second-from-bottom in the 2014–15 campaign, before folding in the summer. He joined Northern League side Shildon as a coach in May 2017.
The next two seasons Boyd was unable to negotiate an extended-term deal with a club , and ended up playing part-time roles with Carlisle United, Gretna, Macclesfield Town, and finally Accrington Stanley before finally signing with Conference club Southport in the middle of the season of 2006-07. The Southport career was marred by a disappointing an untimely penalty missed in the first fixture of the campaign. The following year, he moved into Sligo Rovers in the Republic of Ireland.

In his first season as a midfielder for Newcastle United, he never got into the first team but instead joined Port Vale in 2002. After two years at Port Vale the player moved to northern Scottish club Gretna through Carlisle United. After failing to make an impact, after that, he was reintroduced back to the Football League with a Macclesfield Town loan in the year 2005. After a brief stint at Accrington Stanley in the year 2006, he joined the non-league club Southport. Southport joined Irish soccer club Sligo Rovers in 2007, before moving towards Barrow in the English non-league scene along with Barrow the next year. He joined Workington through Droylsden in the year 2011, and then joined Celtic Nation in June 2013. He was instrumental in helping Celtic Nation to a second-place finishing within the Northern League in 2013-14, before taking over the management post during the 2014-15 season at which point the club was shut down. He then played for Penrith as well as Carlisle City.
Mark started his career with his time in the Newcastle United youth team coming through the ranks, before departing for free for League One side Port Vale after being suggested to “Valiants” manager Brian Horton by Bobby Robson. However, he sustained an injury to his ankle which required surgery with only the last few months remaining in the season. Boyd never really pushed his return to the fold the following season when Vale were battling for the playoffs within League One and he was released on mutual consent in 2004 and was able to become a member of Carlisle United until the end of the season.
In February 2011 Boyd signed a short contract at Droylsden of the Conference North, following a one-month loan spell. In the June that year he became Workington’s first summer signing, penning a one-year deal. The “Reds” finished 13th and 14th in the Conference North in 2011–12 and 2012–13. He quit Workington in June 2013 to join Northern League side Celtic Nation. He helped Celtic Nation to a second-place finish in the Northern League in 2013–14. After taking a career break, he joined Penrith of the Northern League Division One in March 2016, and moved on to Northern Alliance Premier Division side Carlisle City later in the year.
