Marina Rachel Picciotto (born June 22nd 23rd, 1963) is an American neuroscientist renowned for her research on the importance of nicotine in addiction as well as reward behavior. Her title is Charles B. G. Murphy Professor of Psychiatry, and professor at the Child Study Center and the Departments of Neuroscience and of Pharmacology at the Yale University School of Medicine. In 2015 she is the editor-in-chief of Journal of Neuroscience.

Picciotto was introduced to the field of neuroscience as an undergraduate research student in Stanford University, where she collaborated alongside Richard Scheller. She discovered her that the FMRFamide gene is responsible for the creation of several versions that contain the neuropeptide. She went on to PhD work with Paul Greengard at Rockefeller University where she cloned the gene for calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase 1. As an Human Frontier Science Program postdoctoral associate alongside Jean-Pierre Changeux at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and Picciotto developed one of the first mice knock-outs devoid of the nicotinic receptor subunit. Picciotto returned to the United States in 1995 to join the Yale University faculty as an assistant professor, and then rising up the ranks until she became Professor Charles B.G. Murphy Professor of Psychiatry in the year 2008. Her lab is famous for its work on the brain circuits that regulate nicotine addiction. Recent research from Picciotto discovered that prenatal exposure to nicotine can have significant impacts upon adult behaviors. In interviews with press she has expressed concern about the use of electronic cigarettes as well as low-dose nicotine cigarettes.
